Behind the System

I built this game system like a control system

Soul - Danger - Growth

Before I wrote a single chapter of this series, I spent years designing products and control systems for a living - first as a mechanical engineer, later as a CEO for various companies. So when I sat down to build Aedric's progression system, I didn't reach for "generic RPG stats." I reached for what I actually know: how you design a system that responds honestly to input.

A couple of decisions came straight out of that background.

No HP bar, no mana bar

You won't find a health meter or a mana gauge anywhere in this series. That was deliberate. In a real control system, you don't display every variable - you display the ones that matter and let the rest show up as consequences. So in Eldoria, overexertion doesn't drain a blue bar. It gives Aedric a headache, blurred vision, a hand that won't stop shaking. You feel the cost instead of watching a number tick down.

Two systems, two speeds

Aedric's growth runs on two separate tracks, moving at very different speeds on purpose. Base Stats & Skills (Levels 1-144) are the fast track - Strength, Dexterity, combat skills, crafting - climbing steadily through practice and use, the way you'd expect any RPG stat to. Soul Properties (Levels 0-100) are the slow track - Courage, Compassion, Awareness, and the rest of the thirteen. These still climb point by point, 1, 2, 3... but not from grinding or repetition - each point comes from an actual choice or moment of growth in a specific situation. Then at 25, 50, 75, and 100, the climb pauses for a trial before you're allowed past that threshold.

Here's Aedric on page one, before any of it has really started - Strength 9, Dexterity 8, Constitution 9, Intelligence 9, Perception 8, Charisma 3, Luck 8. Seven base stats. No HP, no mana, no stamina bar in sight. Just a kid who hasn't found out yet what he actually is.

And yes - if none of this is your thing, that's fine too. Every book opens with the same promise: the Stat Sheet and System Update chapters sit in their own separate chapters right after the story beats that trigger them. Skip them entirely and you won't miss a line of plot.
